How much sugar do you think you eat and drink daily??
A few teaspoons in your daily coffees, a little sprinkled on your breakfast cereal, and maybe another spoonful in your sweet dessert at night?
It’s hard to know isn’t it – especially as most of the sugar we are consuming is not what we add to our food ourselves – it is found in the sugar rich food and drinks we buy – such as cakes, pastries, sweets, chocolate and even savoury snacks.
Here are the sweet, hard facts from the latest ABS report:
The average Australian consumes 60 g (14 tsp) sugar daily.
81% of this sugar is from “sometimes” or “junk” foods.
Over half of this sugar comes from sugary drinks.
Teenage boys are drinking 10 kg sugar per year from soft
drinks ALONE!! (Not including energy, sports drinks, juice or
cordial.
Over one third of the daily food and drink eaten by Australian
children are “sometimes” foods.
51% of household budgets are spent on these “sometimes”
foods.
A healthy diet would be around 15% cheaper.
So THINK about it – if your stomach is full of these foods you love, isn’t there less space to eat the foods your body really needs??
